Demonstrator 3 - Modelling
During assembly, thin-walled and flexible components can distort due to both clamping and process forces. By identifying optimal clamping points and forces, part quality can be controlled. A thin-walled part to be ground is shown below.
Modelling problems in AFFIX can be split into three main areas:
- Machining
- Welding
- Grinding
Three modular modelling systems are being developed, which can be plugged in to the overall AFFIX system. To be useful, the modelling work being carried out is very closely linked to the case studies. However, smaller models have also been developed, which will validate the approach used.

Parametric models of the parts and fixtures have been produced and novel fixtures and clamping actuators have been developed.
